Sideboards

Sideboards are making a strong comeback of late, with interior designers increasingly recognising their low rise appeal. They've moved on from the coffin-like boxes of the 60s and 70s, however, and are now bright, understated and functional pieces of living room furniture.

Storage is the first appeal of the modern sideboard. With drawers, shelves and compartments behind doors, they're great places for storing away anything from toys to paperwork. But it's their height and scale that have made them a staple of the modern home. Standing at around waist height, they make beautiful additions to any room, and most people use them for photos, flowers, fruit bowls and such like, giving them pride of place in the natural eye line.

The decor you have in your home can easily be continued in your sideboard too, as we have a fantastic selection of styles to consider. A bare wood sideboard has a solid, traditional appearance to it, which fits beautifully into almost any setting, especially the darker woods, which have a real elegance to them – especially with colourful objects on top.

Painted wood sideboards are also proving popular, and it's no mystery why when you get up close. The smooth lines and shiny surfaces look amazing in a modern living room, where the lighting can make them stand out or sink away, depending on how you want to illuminate them.

Some of our modern takes on the sideboard slot perfectly into any contemporary space. Those with chrome finish in their framework and detailing have a dazzling cocktail bar feel and are superb in a living room with your bottles and snacks on top when you're entertaining. The rest of the time they're a bright reminder of functional taste.

Available in long and short versions, it doesn't matter how much wall space you have – there's a sideboard to fit. A particularly stunning look is a whole wall taken up with one or more sideboards. It's an efficient use of space because there's no reason shelving can't be put up over the top, but a bare wall, or a wall with pictures hanging, is just as attractive. The lengthy sideboard can then accommodate your TV, plus any plants, books and ornaments for a beautiful effect at a really human scale.

Take a look through our collection of sideboards to see if any of them inspire you. We're sure there's one to fit your living room.
